We recently learned that Embracer Group is considering selling Gearbox, the studio responsible for the Borderlands franchise. According to reports, third-party companies have already set their sights on Gearbox, although the possibility that Gearbox will become an independent company cannot be ruled out, but this has not yet been confirmed by anyone.
In addition, at Take-Two’s recent shareholder meeting, one shareholder asked CEO Strauss Zelnick if he was considering buying Gearbox. He highly appreciated the work of the studio, but did not give an exact answer.
“We have a very long relationship with Gearbox that we value very much. They are a great company. They not only made Borderlands, but also Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands and other games.
And I have no doubt that they will continue to operate successfully in the future. We are very pleased that we have a long-term publishing relationship with them. This partnership will exist regardless of who ultimately owns Gearbox. But as far as our potential interest is concerned, we usually do not speculate on possible deals.”
Strauss Zelnick’s answer clearly states that if Gearbox is purchased by another company, it will retain the rights to publish Borderlands and its spin-offs.
How interested Take-Two is in buying them is unknown, but time will tell.
