Harvest Island is a farming simulator inspired by Stardew Valley, with one significant difference – it is a horror game. Unravel the mysteries of your home island as you take care of the farm and explore biomes that become increasingly dangerous and far from home.
The game puts you in control of brother and sister duo Will and Samantha, who live with their father, who may not be telling them the whole truth about the island. The island is watched over by the gods, who ask for offerings in exchange for Bless, a currency that can be used to upgrade your farm, build, and craft.
The game has all the mechanics you’d expect from a farming simulator, but also contains dark secrets that allow you to explore areas far from home, including a maze-like forest and an abandoned mine. The game also features a day/night cycle, and elements such as ocean tides also affect exploration.
For players who are more interested in the horror aspect rather than the day-to-day tasks of a farming simulator, there is a story mode that allows for more of a narrative and exploration focus.
It’s unclear what horrors are lurking on Harvest Island, but the latest trailer shows several scenes of mutilated animals found around the island. The game’s marketing hints that its dark secrets may be tied to the mysterious gods of Harvest Island, but you’ll have to find out for yourself.
Like Stardew Valley, Harvest Island is being developed by a one-man team called Yobob Games. The game will be released on PC via Steam on October 10.
