The first scientific data will appear only in a few weeks.
The American space agency has published a selection of photographs dedicated to the landing of the landing capsule of the OSIRIS-REx probe. The capsule contains samples taken from the surface of the asteroid Bennu.
The OSIRIS-REx probe was launched to the asteroid in 2016 and reached Bennu two years later. OSIRIS-REx spent another couple of years collecting samples and other data before embarking on its return flight to Earth.
The OSIRIS-REx landing capsule touched down in Utah on the evening of September 24. In the photographs you can see how NASA specialists found the capsule and organized its transportation to a special laboratory.
The capsule was transported to the laboratory by helicopter and opened only in a specially prepared clean room. Its configuration ensures that the asteroid fragments contained in the capsule will not be contaminated by terrestrial materials.
It is expected that a complete study of the contents of the capsule will take several years, but the first report is promised to be presented much earlier – already on October 11.
