16,384 good reasons?
It may not seem like it to you, but the Geforce RTX 4060 Ti 16GB is something very special. For the first time since the GTX 960, you can decide for yourself: Should it be 8 or 16 GiBytes of memory (with the same GPU performance)? While this choice is laudable and sensible, the surcharge raises questions. A look at the PCGH price comparison lists many models based on the Geforce RTX 4060 Ti 16GB at 530 euros – that’s 130 euros or a good 30 percent more than the RTX 4060 Ti 8GB. Is it worth it or is it better to go for a Geforce RTX 4070 or Radeon RX 6800 (XT)? Our big test provides answers to these questions, in which a new Radeon with 16 GiBytes makes its first appearance.
AD106 on steroids
Apart from the memory, the Geforce RTX 4060 Ti 16GB largely corresponds to the RTX 4060 Ti 8GB (test in PCGH 07/2023). The only difference concerns the board power: This is increased from 160 to 165 watts to power the 8 instead of 4 memory modules, which are installed on the front and back. Both versions of the Geforce RTX 4060 Ti are based on the Ada graphics chip AD106. This brings all the RTX 4000 features to the mid-range and relies on the “Ada Lovelace” architecture, which has been significantly modified compared to the RTX 3000. This includes a memory connection reduced to 128 bits, which is compensated for by a significantly larger level 2 buffer.
