“Hyenas” will no longer be published. As Sega announced today, development of the multiplayer title has been discontinued. In Europe in particular, there are expected to be structural changes triggered by low profitability.
After Sega and Creative Assembly’s “Hyenas” made an appearance at Gamescom 2023 and changes to the business model were confirmed in advance, the publisher announced today that the multiplayer title will not be published. Development was stopped.
According to Sega, the decisive factor was the low profitability in Europe, which will lead to structural changes, especially in this region. It wasn’t just “Hyenas” that was hit. Other games that didn’t even make it to the announcement were also stopped.
“In response to the lower profitability of the European region, we have reviewed the title portfolio of each development base in Europe. The resulting action is the cancellation of Hyenas and some unannounced titles in development,” said Sega in the announcement.
Due to the planned structural changes that Sega wants to implement, especially in Europe, the company expects a loss for the current 2023/24 financial year. What this step means for the British studio Creative Assembly is still unclear.
Pop culture raids in space: teams of three against AI
“Hyenas,” a heist and extraction multiplayer shooter announced in June of last year, was scheduled to release this year for PC, Mac, and current and previous generation consoles.
In a competition against artificial intelligence and each other, a total of five teams of three competed to steal pop culture memorabilia in spacious spaceships with zero-G sections.
In our preview Olaf concludedthat “Hyenas” makes a good, if not entirely convincing, impression. Above all, the map design and the free lap sequences promised something that stood out from the competition.
