Meta Quest 3 has been given a date. It is also clear what amount of money interested parties have to invest. Pre-orders are already possible. And there is also new information about Xbox Cloud support.
Even if the concepts differ significantly, Meta Quest 3 can be viewed as a competitor to PlayStation VR2. Both VR headsets follow very similar paths, especially when it comes to price.
The amount to be paid for Meta Quest 3 in this country is 549.99 euros, while Sony charges 599.99 euros for PlayStation VR2. However: Meta’s VR device does not require any additional hardware and is being marketed as a standalone headset, while PSVR2 players also need a PS5, but at the same time benefit from more hardware power.
Meta Quest 3 will release on October 10, 2023. Pre-orders are now possible*, as a look at Amazon reveals. For the aforementioned 549.99 euros there is the “Asgarth’s Wrath 2” bundle including 128 GB hardware.
Mixed reality features and higher resolution
The Meta Quest 3 headset weighs 515 grams, which is an increase of 12 grams compared to the previous Quest 2 model. Despite being only slightly heavier, the new model offers additional functions. This includes six camera sensors that enable mixed reality functions.
These features allow users to play virtual pianos while sitting at the kitchen table. It is also possible to bring virtual board games onto the living room table and the like, to name just two examples.

The Quest 3 headset also improved in terms of graphical performance. Higher fidelity is promised, based on LCDs with a resolution of 2064 x 2208 per eye. That’s around 30 percent more than its predecessor. PlayStation VR2 has 2000 × 2040 pixels per eye and uses OLED.
No eye tracking, but new touch controllers
Meta Quest 3 also has more RAM – at least 8 GB compared to the 6 GB of its predecessor. However, the headset does not support eye tracking. PlayStation VR2 can score points here and the performance of the PS5 thanks to foveated rendering, use it even more specifically.
Meta Quest 3 uses a second-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 chipset and the input devices have also been revised. The Touch Plus controllers differ from previous models in that they have a new ergonomic shape and different haptic functions. This is intended to provide improved tactile feedback when playing.
Since Meta Quest 3 is a standalone VR headset, battery life is a critical point. It should be based on its predecessor. The following average figures serve as a guideline:
General Usage: Up to 2.2 hours Media: 2.9 hours Gaming: 2.4 hours Social: 2.2 hours Productivity: 1.5 hours
The battery charging time is around two hours.
Meta Quest 3 gets Xbox cloud gaming
During meta has numerous quest games on offer, the new VR headset also supports Xbox cloud gaming. The feature was announced almost a year ago. It is now roughly clear when support will be activated.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced during the latest Quest presentation that Microsoft’s cloud gaming service will be available on Meta headsets – including Meta Quest 3 – from December.
