This Friday (29), Netflix released its newest crime thriller film. Starring Benício Del Toro and Justin Timberlake, Chameleons (2023) presents a veteran detective who needs to solve the mysterious murder of a young woman.
Director Grant Singer’s debut feature had a mixed reception, opening with just 41% critical approval on Rotten Tomatoes, while the overall audience registered an incredible 83%. On IMDb, the film received a rating of 6.9 out of 10 — a rating considered reasonable by most users.
In addition to Del Toro and Timberlake, the film’s cast includes Alicia Silverstone (Preppy Girls of Beverly Hills) as Judy Nichols, Eric Bogosian (Succession), Ato Essandoh (The Diplomat), Domenick Lombardozzi (Tulsa King) and Frances Fisher (Watchmen ).
What is the story of Chameleons (2023)?
Tom Nichols (Benício Del Toro) is the detective in charge of investigating the brutal death of Summer Elswick (Matilda Lutz), a young real estate agent. After finding himself involved in a web of lies, everyone becomes a suspect and Nichols begins to question himself even about issues in his personal life. Check out the trailer for Chameleons, below;
The film leads the viewer to have the same doubts as the detective, presenting a culprit and immediately clearing him. This narrative construction can make the sequence of events somewhat confusing, with some elements being poorly explained at the end.

But, after all, who killed Summer?

The film begins with Will Grady (Justin Timberlake) discovering the body of his girlfriend, Summer (Matilda Lutz) in the house they were selling. When Nichols (Benício Del Toro) and his partner, Cleary (Ato Essandoh), begin to investigate, many people become suspects — including Will. In addition to her current boyfriend, Eli (Michael Carmen Pitt), who persecuted the Grady family, was on the list; and Sam (Karl Glusman), Summer’s ex-husband.
However, as Nichols and his wife Judy (Alicia Silverstone) soon discover, the answer is more complex than just one criminal. The third act of Chameleons reveals that Summer was killed to prevent a corruption and drug trafficking scheme from being revealed. Among those involved were not only the Grady family, but all levels of the police department where Nichols worked.
The killer was Will Grady, who not only wanted to silence Summer about his scheme, but took revenge for her cheating on him with her ex-husband, Sam. This, in turn, had his death set up by the police, since, if he were interrogated, he could say something about drug trafficking. Another person who died because he knew too much about the scheme was Eli, but the film didn’t give many details.
What does Nichols do at the end?
After the final shootout, Nichols survives a gunshot wound and calls 911 — the police phone number — but says nothing. The film reveals that Nichols moved to this city due to another corruption scheme at his old police station. Despite not being involved, he did not report them.
With the arrival of the FBI, it is proven that, this time, he did the right thing. Even if it meant denouncing his closest friends, losing his stability, and even tarnishing the reputation of his wife’s uncle, Captain Robert Allen.
