After Nintendo switched off the eShop for the 3DS and Wii U consoles last March, the online services will soon also be discontinued. As the company announced, it will be ready in April 2024.
Owners of the 3DS and Wii U consoles have to be strong now. Nintendo recently announced that it would be discontinuing online services for the two devices. This means that online games and online co-op games can no longer be played on the consoles or internet rankings can be compared.
This step follows the Closure of the eShop for 3DS and Wii U. The plan was announced in 2022 and completed last March. This means no new purchases can be made on the systems. However, digital goods that have already been purchased can still be downloaded for the foreseeable future.
Online services will be switched off in 2024
As Nintendo writes on its official support website, services for 3DS and Wii U will be discontinued in April 2024. A specific date and time will follow. However, the company cautions that support may end earlier than planned if an event occurs that would make it difficult to continue online services.
As Nintendo continues to write, with a few exceptions, all online services for all Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software will be switched off. The exceptions include the “Pokémon Bank” program, which can still be used. Players should ask the respective companies what the situation is with games from other publishers.

What will still be possible, however, is communication between 3DS family systems via StreetPass. This connection communicates locally between consoles and has become popular again with gamers, especially after the discontinuation of the eShop on the handheld. However, the SpotPass setting can no longer be used after April 2024 because it relies on online communication.
