HISTORY
The lottery was established by royal decree of Queen D. Maria I, on November 18, 1783, authorizing the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa to operate an annual lottery, under the supervision and supervision of the Royal Treasury, with the profits that arose from this being shared by the Royal Hospital, Casa dos Expostos and the Royal Academy of Sciences.
The 1st extraction took place on September 1, 1784 and took around 34 days, with a 1st prize value of 12,000$000 réis.
The Lottery was suspended in 1798, with the advent of real lotteries, leaving the Misericórdia de Lisboa deprived of an important source of revenue and its pious function compromised. It would, however, be reestablished in 1804 but interrupted again until 1811, the time of the French invasions.
In 1892, the operation of the game was attributed to a private company, and it was only in 1893 that the Lottery began to be definitively operated, under a monopoly regime, by Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa.
On November 24, 1955, through Decree-Law 40 397, the Lottery formally and fully assumed the name of National Lottery, a designation it maintains to this day and which encompasses the Classic and Popular Lottery.
On March 10, 1987, the Popular Lottery was launched, with more affordable prices for players. This launch was related to the need to combat illegal gambling, namely “raffles” that proliferated in various media, channeling this demand towards the State’s legal offer of social games, as well as to win over an audience with less purchasing power.
Classic and Popular Lotteries fall into the category of lotteries where each draw corresponds to the issuance of numbered tickets, for participation in drawings of numbers called extractions. The prize plan, previously defined, is printed on the back of the ticket, determining the categories, quantities and values of the prizes to be awarded in relation to the total ticket issue.
The fractions and series of tickets (composed of 5 fractions) of the Classic Lottery are associated with different extractions related to special seasons, celebrations or other festive events, the price of the fraction depending on the type of extraction: Ordinary: €5 | Specials: €10 | Extraordinary: €15. The prize value in the fraction corresponds to 1/5 of the value attributed to the ticket.
The first prize can reach the value of 12 million and five hundred thousand euros, as is the case with the 1st prize in the emblematic Christmas Lottery. And the Classic Lottery is the State’s social game with the highest probability of matching the number awarded with the 1st prize. On average, one in every three fractions is awarded.
With 1st Prize values varying between 75 and 150 thousand euros, the prices of the Popular Lottery fraction also vary depending on the type of draws: Ordinary: €2 | Specials: €3 | Extraordinary: €5. It is the product from the Games Santa Casa portfolio with the second highest probability of matching the number awarded the 1st Prize.
