Xbox is on its way to relegating Sony to third place in terms of sales for the first time.
According to a report from analysts at Newzoo, the video game industry will generate $184 billion in revenue for the entire fiscal year of 2023. By 2026 it is expected to rise to $205.7 billion.
Even though there is growth in the PC and console areas and the shares are at 29% (console) and 21% (PC), the mobile area continues to generate the most sales despite a slight decline to 49%.
If you look at the sales for the first half of the year based on companies, Tencent dominates the top 10 by far in all service games on all platforms. Tencent owns about 40% of Epic Games (Fortnite and Unreal Engine). Places 2 to 4 go to SONY, Apple and Microsoft.

But what if…?
As is well known, Activision Blizzard has been part of Microsoft since October. The sales of the first half of 2023 could therefore no longer be combined with those of Microsoft. But Newzoo made a prediction and created a diagram. It shows what the list would have looked like if both companies’ numbers had been combined.
As can be seen in the image below, in this scenario, Microsoft would have replaced SONY and therefore PlayStation as the second largest gaming company for the first time in the history of the video game industry.

For the next quarter, Microsoft has already announced to its investors that it expects an increase of almost 50% in gaming revenue.
