The Chinese manufacturer Skyworth has just lifted the veil on its Skyhome, an impressive new electric car which takes the form of a concept car. The latter is, however, very close to the future production car and should then tickle the Tesla Model S when it is launched next year.
Until a few years ago, Chinese manufacturers were almost non-existent in Europe. But today it is easy to list several, while they are becoming more and more important. We think in particular of MG as well as BYD, on the way to becoming the number 1 in electric vehicles ahead of Tesla.
An elegant sedan
But now another brand is gradually rising. This is Skyworth, and if you’ve never heard of it, that’s totally normal. Indeed, the latter is in fact a subsidiary of Skywell created in 2017 and dedicated to the production of cars for the general public. Its first electric creation was unveiled in 2020, bearing the name ET5. Yes, yes, like the Nio sedan.
It was then renamed EV6, like Kia’s electric SUV. Definitely. But the Korean firm does not seem to be too worried about competition from the Chinese brand, unlike Audi with Nio. But it seems that Skyworth is not here to laugh. And for good reason, the manufacturer has just lifted the veil on another car, which takes for the moment the form of a concept car close to 90% of the future production version.
The latter is called Skyhome and this time sports the lines of a large electric sedan. However, its dimensions have not yet been revealed, while Chinese car expert Tycho de Feijter has published some information on his X account (formerly Twitter). If the Cd (drag coefficient) has not been announced, it should be quite low according to the design of the car.
Indeed, the latter sports clean and aerodynamic lines, and She gets camera mirrors and door handles integrated into the bodywork. In addition, the overall silhouette seems to have been designed to maximize air penetration, while the sedan is fitted with aerodynamic rims.
A spectacular interior
For the moment, we do not know the size of the wheelbase of the electric sedan, which however seems to have generous dimensions. Enough to allow it to compete head-on with the Tesla Model S as well as the BMW i7 and the BYD Seal, among others. On board, however, this new Skyhome is distinguished from its American rival by its driving position equipped witha huge digital panel. The latter reminds us a little of the SUV presented by the Aehra brand.
We also note the presence of a Yoke steering wheel, undoubtedly inspired by that offered by Tesla. But that’s not all, because rear passengers can enjoy the choice of small screens in the seats or a larger one that extends from the roof liner. On the other hand, no word yet on the trunk volume or on the different options offered on board. We only know that the car is equipped with artificial intelligence according to the brand’s press release.
Several versions will be offered for the sedan, which will be available with two or four-wheel drive. The highest-performance variant will boast a power output of 460 kW, which equates to around 625 horsepower. 0 to 100 km/h will be achieved in just 3.5 seconds, enough to also rival the Lucid Air, among others. The sedan will also be equipped with an 800 volt architecture like the Kia EV6, allowing it to recover 490 kilometers in 10 minutes. Ultra-fast charging!
However, the total autonomy has not yet been announced, as has the battery capacity. The production Skyhome should officially see the light of day in China during the 2nd quarter of 2024 while its price has not yet been announced at the moment.
