Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, the latest game created by Retro Studios, Nintendo’s internal studio, has celebrated ten years since it came out on Wii U. It is expected that this year they will release (or talk about) Metroid Prime 4, their first new game since then.
Retro Studios It is known worldwide for its games. Metroid Primea trilogy released on GameCube and Wii, considered (particularly its first game) to be one of the best games in history.
After working on Metroid, they began to revive the games Donkey Kong Country in Returns (2010) and Tropical Freeze (2014), crowning themselves as the successors of Rare, a Western second party from Nintendo with permission to work on the most precious Nintendo licenses and with seemingly infinite talent.
However, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, which turns 10 today, turned out to be Retro Studios’ last game in a very long season. And it remains so, until the release of Metroid Prime 4.

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, the latest from Retro and Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze launched in Japan on February 13, 2014 (it’s already February 13 in Japan), so the game has officially turned ten years old, a date that some already consider enough to consider it “retro”…
In Europe it came out a bit later, on February 21, 2014, on the console Wii U. In 2014, there was still hope that the Wii U would rebound in sales thanks to games like this, Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, all released that year.
But when Nintendo replaced Wii U with Nintendo Switch, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze was one of the first games to receive its corresponding port for Switch (with the new “Funky Mode” that did not contribute anything), in May 2018.
Retro Studios was responsible for this version, as well as the acclaimed Metroid Prime Remastered from a year ago. They have not been missing, but much more was expected from this Texan studio, which did not begin working on Metroid Prime 4 until 2019, after a failed attempt at Bandai Namco.
In reality, Retro Studios has worked on many more projects (many earlier, in the Wii era) that were sadly cancelled. The Texan studio has had bad luck.
Donkey Kong has not been featured again since then, but rumors speak of a new game in development, although made for the first time by Nintendo’s internal studios EPD. Also, this year the Universal Studios roller coaster opens…
Many hope that Metroid Prime 4 be one of the surprises that Nintendo has in store for this year, of possible transition towards Switch 2and it comes out this year, ending the ten-year drought of new games from Retro Studios.
