The creator of Stardew Valley has said he will never charge for the game’s DLC, but now he felt the need to be a little more specific about it before annoying other creatives.
As we recently reported, Stardew Valley creator Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone has reiterated on social media that he has no intention of charging players for DLC and updates to his game.
However, he said it very emphatically, precisely swearing “on the honor of the family name”. This has however led some people to suppose that the creative believes it is wrong across the board to charge for this type of content.
Barone then decided to clarify the issue, before being misunderstood.
Barone’s Comment on Paid DLC
ConcernedApe’s original comment, which you can also see below, is from July 22nd and reads precisely: “I swear on the honor of my family name that I will never charge for a DLC or update in my entire life. Save this comment and shame me if I ever break this oath.”
On July 24, however, he felt the need to clarify: “By the way, I’m not criticizing developers who charge for DLC. Everyone’s circumstances are different. This is just my personal approach and should not be taken as a criticism of anyone else.”
Considering that this is the internet, Barone’s clarification is more than necessary, since it is easy to find people ready to create useless discussions where there is no need. Let’s also remember that publishing free content for a game already on the market is not a bad commercial choice: many developers do the same because this allows them to continue to attract new users and helps sell the base game in the long run.
Just look at No Man’s Sky which has been releasing free content for years and gaining more and more players.
