The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt users probably remember how much time they spent searching for clues in the so-called Witcher Senses mode. Quest designer Paweł Sasko spoke about the creation of the obsessive mechanics.
When CD Projekt Red started working on The Witcher 3, the clue-based gameplay loop felt fresh, Sasko says. Sasko worked on the mechanics with veteran quest designer Danisz Markiewicz.
“When we were working on (this mechanic) in 2012, we thought it was a great idea. And when The Witcher 3 came out, we realized that we had gone a little overboard, gone too far,” Sasco said in a recent interview with a Brazilian YouTube channel. Flow Games.
Sasko recalls that there were so many sections with witcher senses in The Witcher 3 that it hurt the game’s pacing. So the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions tried to tone down the intensity of such investigations.
While The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt expansions have already improved the pace of gameplay, Sasko said the pinnacle of CD Projekt Red’s efforts in this regard was the Phantom Liberty add-on for Cyberpunk 2077.
“There are no situations like in The Witcher 3, where you exclaim: ‘Oh my God, another bloody trail, monster paw prints, how many more?’ Conclusions were made, and the work was done better,” says Sasko.
CD Projekt Red is currently working on both the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 (codenamed Orion) and the next Witcher (Polaris), with nearly 65% of the studio’s staff currently working on the latter.
