There’s a strike again. This time the emerging AI is the cause. But what does that mean for “GTA 6”? The all-clear has now been given.
There is another strike in the entertainment industry that also has an impact on video games. The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists union, or SAG-AFTRA for short, is mobilizing against the use of AI content. Background information is summarized in our article from this morning.
The productions of several publishers are potentially affected, including Take-Two. However, the effects initially appear to be less severe than feared. For example, there was a question mark over the development of “GTA 6”. In the meantime, the all-clear has been given.
GTA 6 and many other games not affected
After there was initially no confirmed information about “GTA 6” but a lot of speculation, a representative of the union explained that the measures do not apply to this game. This was first reported by the Kotaku-Reporter Ethan Gach.
Accordingly, games that have been in production for a year or more, as well as live service games, are not affected by the strike. And “GTA 6,” which has been in development for years, falls quite clearly into this category.
The game actors strike rules are messier than it first seems.
They can’t work on new projects, or ones recently started, but games in production a year or more ago and live service/ongoing games are excluded from the strike (for now).

For all doubters, an explicit confirmation followed: “I can confirm that GTA 6 is exempt,” a spokesperson for the publishers involved in the dispute told Kotaku in an email. A look at the SAG-AFTRA database also confirms this.
NEW: A rep for the game companies involved in the actors strike confirms that GTA 6 is NOT one of the struck projects currently in development.

It is currently unclear which actors are involved in the upcoming Rockstar blockbuster. Aside from the speculation of some fans trying to identify the voice actors of the two main characters in “Grand Theft Auto 6,” little is known about the cast.
That could soon change: Another trailer and information about the game is expected towards the end of the year, after the debut trailer released in late 2023 went completely through the roof.
Who needs graphic designers when we have AI?
The strike called this week was initiated because the union failed to agree to adequate protections for its members regarding the use of AI. Last year, SAG-AFTRA members already agreed to strike if the union failed to reach adequate terms in negotiations on the Interactive Media Agreement.
When will GTA 6 be released?
Since Rockstar’s upcoming flagship game will not be affected, the plans remain in place for now. However, fans will have to wait more than a year until “GTA 6” is released. The launch is planned for fall 2025.
“GTA 6” will be released for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. PC gamers will miss out for now, but can confidently expect a port.

The exciting question is what performance “GTA 6” will show on the PS5 Pro. The unannounced console could come onto the market in autumn 2024. If the new Rockstar game is stretched over several generations like its predecessor, even more powerful hardware options are likely to emerge in the coming years.
