Microsoft has begun testing a new way to access your Android phone directly from File Explorer in Windows 11. Windows Insiders can already test the new feature, which lets you wirelessly browse folders and files on your Android phone.
The integration into File Explorer means that the Android device appears just like a regular USB device in the left-hand pane. This makes it easy to copy or move files between your PC and Android phone, as well as rename or delete them. It’s certainly much faster than using the existing Phone Link program.
To take advantage of this feature, you need a device running Android 11 or later, a Windows Insider membership, and the Link to Windows beta app. All four Windows Insider channels, including the Release Preview, have access to the new feature. This indicates that the feature is at a high level of maturity. Therefore, all Windows 11 PC users will soon be able to access this new feature.
To enable this File Explorer feature, you’ll need to go to Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Mobile Devices and select the Manage devices section to allow your computer to connect to your Android phone. The prompt will include a toggle for File Explorer access, along with the usual selections for notifications and camera access.
