Late last night, Eirik reported the news that SAG-AFTRA will be striking again, this time specifically in the video game sector, to fight the way artificial intelligence (and a few other things) is being used in the industry.
Since games tend to take a lot longer to develop than movies rather than TV shows, we assumed that if we might see games in a few years that are a part of the development process, it wouldn’t have any impact on the gaming world. This naturally led many to wonder about Grand Theft Auto VI.
In a statement My City In a statement provided by Rockstar, Take-Two, confirmed that GTA VI is exempt from the strikes and will not be affected.
A Take-Two spokesperson says: “I can confirm that GTA VI is exempt.”
This is not necessarily because work with SAG-AFTRA staff on the project has already been completed, as it is also confirmed that GTA VI is still listed in the SAG-AFTRA database as a game that people can work on, as it is mentioned that “any game already in development before September 2023 is also exempt.”
This seems to suggest that even many games we’ll see in 2025 and 2026, and maybe even 2027 and beyond (meaning The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2.0 could still be safe, as they’ve been in development at CD Projekt Red in some capacity for some time) won’t be affected by these strikes, suggesting the impact could be seen even further into the future.
