At the beginning you don’t know why you find yourself as a ghost in an abstract world. In your search for answers you meet an angel-like being who you would like to follow into higher spheres. But it’s not that easy, which is why you first have to complete a whole series of puzzle and combat challenges on your journey.
Hauntii sends you through hand-drawn environments that are extremely attractively staged with clean lines and a palette reduced to two colors. However, the fixed camera perspective means that distances and directions are sometimes not so clearly visible in the 2D world, for example when you are floating through the air. You are mostly busy exploring, but there is also shooting: you get close to small and sometimes larger opponents with energy projectiles in the style of a twin-stick shooter. You can “haunt” peaceful figures and some objects in the same way – then you control them temporarily and use their abilities to solve tasks.
Hauntii likes to keep you in the dark about the exact details: some activities such as mini-games and races against the clock are obvious, but often you have to look for something sparkling in the area and then figure out for yourself what is required at that point. You can’t leave out much, because some of the later areas require quite high “fulfillment rates”.
