Taiwanese company MediaTek managed to increase the volume of processor deliveries for smartphones with 5G network support by 53% year-on-year to 53 million units in the first quarter of this year, Omdia analysts calculated. Qualcomm had to give in to its competitor amid less pronounced growth dynamics of deliveries, and now MediaTek has the right to be considered the largest supplier of chips for 5G smartphones.
In a year-on-year comparison, according to Omdia data, MediaTek’s market share has grown from 22.8% to 29.2%, while Qualcomm’s figures have dropped from 31.2% to 26.5%. The ranking in descending order of share from third place is continued by Apple, Samsung (Exynos), Huawei (HiSilicon), Google (Tensor) and Unisoc. The share of other developers of processors for smartphones with 5G support does not exceed 5% in total.
At the same time, as representatives explain IEEE ComSocthe methodology for forming Omdia statistics raises some questions. Firstly, it is not specified how 5G modems of certain brands supplied separately from the central processors are taken into account. Secondly, in this sense, Apple combines its own processors with Qualcomm modems. Finally, the range of MediaTek and Qualcomm products includes components that combine central processors and modems with simultaneous support for 4G and 5G networks, and it is difficult to say how they are taken into account in the statistics.
According to Omdia, in the first quarter, shipments of 5G smartphones priced under $250 grew by 62% year-on-year to 62.8 million units. This allowed MediaTek to become the market leader. In the sub-$150 price segment, smartphone sales overall grew by a third, from 90 to 120 million units. The spread of 5G networks leads to the fact that more and more affordable smartphones with their support appear on the market. In the price segment over $600, demand for smartphones also grew, but only from 70 to 73 million units. The release of the Samsung Galaxy S24 and Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max largely contributed to this trend. Qualcomm still has a chance for revenge, since the promotion of processors with new artificial intelligence functions will be most active in the upper price range.
