The smartphone market is now more competitive than ever before. While in the early years of the modern smartphone era, general market growth boosted all companies such as Samsung, Apple, Motorola and Co. at the same time, companies are now fighting hard for market share. Google is also getting involved and is trying to outdo the competition with smartphones, tablets, smartwatches and the like. Google’s growing success proves it right. Now things are getting more exciting than Pixel fans have experienced for a long time, because 2024 will see some upheavals.
Smartphones from Google: First Nexus, now Pixel
Google first launched the Pixel devices in 2016. Eight years ago, however, the range consisted of just one smartphone in two different sizes. Thus, the now very popular Pixel brand was born. But Google has been actively involved in the smartphone market for some time now.

Not only does Google produce the world’s most popular mobile operating system, Android, but since 2010 Google has also been releasing smartphones and sometimes tablets and other gadgets under the “Nexus” brand for years. The last generation of Nexus smartphones, the high-quality Nexus 6P and the affordable Nexus 5X, were released in 2015. The Pixel series is now entering its ninth generation and Google has some great news.
Google is making everything new: This year there’s Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold
In less than three weeks, on Tuesday, August 13th, Google will finally officially present the brand new Pixel 9 series at an event. For months, Google has been giving us little glimpses of the Pixel 9 in its various variants. This year, however, Google is throwing some habits out the window.
Not only is the Pixel 9 being introduced much earlier this time (August instead of October), but for the first time Google is also releasing four different versions of the smartphone at once: Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. There is probably a device to suit every taste and Google is expanding its target group again. But there are even more big changes on the agenda.
Google apparently listens to criticism of Pixel smartphones
In May 2022, Google took a big step and released a completely new smartphone to compete in a market segment primarily against strong competition from Samsung, while Apple does not yet have a foot in the door in this area.
This is how the first Google Pixel Fold came onto the market. A foldable smartphone that houses a large foldable screen inside and is in direct competition with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold. However, you have to dig deep into your pockets for the Google Pixel Fold. Despite this, there was also a lot of justified criticism of Google’s foldable smartphone. But Google has obviously listened carefully and has significantly improved the successor, the Google Pixel 9 Fold.

There you go: Google makes sensible decisions about the Pixel 9
As a exclusive report from Android Authority reveals, Google has designed the new Pixel Fold completely differently. The outer display is significantly larger and at the same time narrower, thus approaching the proportions usual for normal smartphones today. Of course, this also has an impact on the heart of the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, the large inner display.
The screen inside the first Pixel Fold was wider than it was tall, but the new aspect ratios on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold result in an almost square format. This should make the foldable smartphone easier to use, especially when typing on the on-screen keyboard. At the same time, the inner display grows from 7.6 inches to 8 inches, and the outer display grows from 5.8 inches to 6.24 inches.

The very thick display edges of the inner screen, which were often criticized in the first Pixel Fold, are also likely to be a thing of the past with the Pixel Pro 9 Fold, as proven by a video that Google itself published and which shows the new smartphone. While the prices for the Pixel 9 are expected to rise significantly again this year, the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold is the only Pixel 9 model that is unlikely to be affected by this. However, the price of the device is already extremely high.
