Ookla has published statistics on mobile internet speeds among Russian operators in the first half of 2024. The data was obtained by measuring internet speeds using the Speedtest app — a total of 12.75 million such tests were performed on 1.38 million devices during the reporting period. In Ookla’s global ranking, Russia took 86th place with an average of 25.63 Mbps — Qatar came in first with a speed of 334.63 Mbps.
MegaFon turned out to be the fastest operator, with an average network speed of 37.88 Mbit/s. Beeline came in second with 35.94 Mbit/s, MTS came in third with 31.74 Mbit/s, and Tele2 came in fourth with 25.59 Mbit/s. MegaFon’s median download speed was 29.65 Mbit/s, and upload speed was 9.46 Mbit/s. With these figures, the operator turned out to be the leader in 19 and 39 regions of Russia, respectively. MegaFon showed the highest download speed of 56.96 Mbit/s in Moscow, and the lowest of 24 Mbit/s in the Belgorod Region. The operator demonstrated the highest upload speed of 15.5 Mbit/s in the Penza Region. The median download speed for Beeline was 27.5 Mbit/s, for MTS – 25.09 Mbit/s, for Tele2 – 20.34 Mbit/s. In terms of download speed, Beeline was even ahead of MegaFon, showing 9.58 Mbit/s; MTS demonstrated 8.30 Mbit/s in this test, Tele2 – 6.42 Mbit/s.
“In order to maintain our positions, this work cannot be stopped. Therefore, in 2024, we will continue the refarming program – we will transfer the frequencies used in 2G and 3G communication networks to the modern LTE standard, provide high-quality communications to federal highways and sparsely populated areas, and also introduce new technologies to the network,” cites ComNews commentary from a representative of the MegaFon press service regarding the Ookla study. VimpelCom (brand Beeline) emphasized that the operator’s subscribers are provided with the necessary speed in abundance: “It is worth noting that the average speed has a very small impact on the end user of the service, since there are practically no services that require more than 12 Mbit/s. What is important here is that the subscriber receives these 10-12 Mbit/s always and everywhere.”
The experts interviewed by the publication recalled that in reality the Speedtest application is more often launched when there are problems with speed, and in normal mode it is turned off because it consumes too much traffic, so the statistics provided are very relative. The low average speed in Russia can be explained by the congestion of 4G networks, and traffic consumption by subscribers continues to grow – when 5G networks begin operating in the country, Russia will rise in the world rankings.
