In addition to the Galaxy Z Fold6, Samsung also unveiled the Galaxy Z Flip6, a clamshell phone with a flexible display. The new product has become thinner, lighter, stronger, and smarter than its predecessor last year, and also received a significant upgrade to the camera system. Unfortunately, the list of changes also includes a price increase of $100.
The Galaxy Z Fold6 is built on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 single-chip platform. For the first time in a Samsung Flip smartphone, it uses a cooling system with an evaporative chamber. The new product has about 12 GB of RAM, which can be considered a significant upgrade compared to 8 GB in last year’s model. For data storage, there is a flash drive of 256 or 512 GB. The Galaxy Z Flip6 (and Z Fold6) will receive 7 years of OS updates and security patches. The new product comes with Android 14 and One UI 6.1.1.
The main camera is now built on a 50-megapixel sensor and is equipped with a lens with an aperture of f / 1.8. There is optical stabilization and 2x digital zoom without loss of quality. The second rear camera remains unchanged – it is built on a 12-megapixel sensor and is equipped with wide-angle optics (123 °). The 10-megapixel front camera has not changed either.
The main display is now an LTPO AMOLED panel with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. The diagonal remains the same, 6.7 inches, as does the FHD+ resolution. The outer Flex Display has the same size and resolution as before: 3.4 inches and 720 × 748 pixels, and still operates at 60 Hz. It can deliver a brightness of up to 1600 cd/m2.
Samsung emphasizes the presence of AI functions in the new clamshells. For example, in the “Auto zoom” mode, the camera automatically scales the image and builds the optimal frame, focusing on the person’s face and determining the background of the image. This is convenient, for example, when shooting group portraits, when the smartphone is placed on some surface and shooting occurs without hands. And the Nightography function has been expanded to support HDR video. Advanced image processing functions are available from the Instagram app✴.
Other AI features also make use of the Flex Display, such as Suggested Replies, which analyzes a user’s recent messages and suggests a response to incoming messages, so you don’t even have to open your phone to respond. New widgets are also noted for even greater personalization, as well as the ability to use multiple widgets at once, for example for simultaneous translation.
Samsung has optimized the hinge to create a thinner profile when the phone is closed. The Galaxy Z Flip6 measures 85.1 x 71.9 x 14.9 mm when closed and 165.1 x 71.9 x 6.9 mm when open, and weighs 187 g. The Z Flip5 measured 15.1 mm when closed and 6.9 mm when open. The rest of the dimensions remain unchanged, as does the weight.
The Galaxy Z Flip6, like the Fold6, is the first foldable device to feature IP48 protection against solid particles. This doesn’t prevent dust from getting in, but it should keep larger particles out. Water protection remains the same, allowing you to stay underwater for 30 minutes at a depth of 1.5 m (5 ft). The new device uses Gorilla Glass Victus 2.
The battery capacity has increased to 4,000 mAh, which is significantly more than the 3,700 mAh of last year’s Flip5. Charging remains the same: 25 W wired (up to 50% in about 30 minutes) and 15 W wireless.
The new flip phone is available in Silver Shadow, Yellow, Blue, and Mint, but Samsung.com has a few exclusive options: Crafted Black, White, and Peach.
Pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 start today, with sales starting July 24. The base model with 256GB of storage is priced at $1,100.
