Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold6 foldable smartphone at the Unpacked event in Paris. The new “book” has a thinner and lighter body, fresh hardware, advanced AI features, and a new external display that promises to be more convenient to use than its predecessor.
The Galaxy Z Fold6 has become noticeably lighter and thinner than its predecessor. When unfolded, the thickness has decreased by 0.5 mm, and when folded, by 1.3 mm, to 12.1 mm. The weight has decreased by 14 grams to 239 g, which is only slightly more than the weight of large flagships of the traditional monoblock form factor. For example, the new product is only 7 g heavier than the Galaxy S24 Ultra.
Perhaps the most important change in the Galaxy Z Fold6 is the outer display — it has grown to 6.3 inches, but what’s even better is that it’s a little less elongated. The 22.1:9 aspect ratio may not be traditional yet, but it’s still much better than the 23.1:9 of the previous model. The outer display, as well as the back cover, are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2.
Inside, there is a foldable 7.6-inch Infinity Flex display with an almost square aspect ratio of 20.9:18. The main and external screens are built on Dynamic AMOLED 2X panels with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. The resolution of the internal screen is 2160 × 1856 pixels, and the external one is 2376 × 968 pixels. Peak brightness reaches 2600 and 1600 cd/m2, respectively.
The Galaxy Z Fold6’s hinge has also been redesigned to improve durability. The Fold6 also meets the IP48 standard, making it the first foldable smartphone to be dust-resistant. Granted, this only protects against solid particles larger than 1mm, but it’s still better than anything that’s come before.
The Galaxy Z Fold6 is powered by the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, which is complemented by 12 GB of RAM and a flash drive of 256, 512 or 1024 GB. Samsung also noted that it has installed a 1.6 times larger vapor chamber than in the Fold5 to improve heat dissipation.
The five cameras on board the Galaxy Z Fold6 have not undergone significant hardware upgrades compared to its predecessor. The user will still get a 50 MP main camera with optical stabilization and f / 1.8 optics, which is complemented by a 10 MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom (f / 2.4) and a 12 MP wide-angle module with f / 2.2 optics and a 123-degree viewing angle. A 10 MP selfie camera is located in the hole in the outer display, and a 4 MP camera is hidden under the foldable inner display.
The battery hasn’t received an upgrade. Samsung’s third-generation flip phone is equipped with a 4,400mAh battery that supports 25W wired charging, 15W wireless charging, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging. However, the company promises that the Galaxy Fold6’s improved power efficiency will allow it to last longer between charges.
Samsung detailed the Galaxy AI improvements, highlighting the benefits of the Galaxy Z Fold6’s larger screen. Note Assist and Circle to Search features have been ported over, while One UI 6.1.1 based on Android 14 makes better use of the foldable form factor. For example, Translator mode allows both parties to view translations on the main display and the cover, while Sketch to Image lets AI generate complex images from sketches made in Gallery or Notes.
The Galaxy Z Fold6 will be available in three main colors: Silver Shadow, Pink, and Navy. There will also be exclusive Crafted Black and White options, but only through Samsung.com.
Pricing starts at $1,899.99, with pre-orders open now and retail availability beginning July 24.
