What would we want from a new Wing Commander – impressive visuals, a gripping story and intense 3D battles in space? None of this is available in the live arcade spin-off Arena.
Although the spaceships and environments are borrowed from the legendary series, the game itself has little to do with the original: instead of flying around freely, you zoom around 2D planes in tiny gliders and shoot down other planes. Banal, simple and with the depth of a non-swimmers’ pool – only the online mode for 16 players saves some of the fun.
Pure misleading labels – instead of epic space action, there are simple, cheesy shootouts.
