Russians are increasingly using cloud storage services. Moreover, against the backdrop of this trend, the popularity of domestic cloud storage is growing, reported Forbes.ru with reference to Yota statistics based on the analysis of anonymized subscriber data.
According to Yota, in the first half of 2024, traffic consumption in the cloud storage segment increased by 28% year-on-year. The highest growth was recorded by Russian services (32%), while foreign online disks had a growth rate of 25%.
Although more than half of all traffic comes from domestic cloud storage, foreign platforms are more popular with younger audiences: in the 14–20 age group, they account for 65% of traffic, and among users aged 21 to 25, they account for 54%.
Yota noted that Yandex Disk was the most popular cloud storage service among Russians this year, with user activity also growing more than others (+61% year-on-year). Google Drive is in second place in terms of Internet traffic consumption (+46%), with iCloud in third place (+19%). The top five also included Mail.ru Cloud (down 17%) and Microsoft’s OneDrive, with activity falling by 32% amid reports of Microsoft’s plans to close access to its cloud services for companies in Russia.
Preferences in services often depend on the user’s age, analysts say. Cloud storage is most actively used by people in the 26-35 age categories (36% of traffic) and 36-45 years (26%). Young users aged 14 to 20 are much less active – only 3% of traffic. Yota also noted that zoomers mainly prefer to use Google Drive, while other Russians mostly use Yandex Disk.
