At San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel officially announced two new Avengers films. Robert Downey Jr. is returning as Doctor Doom, and the Russo brothers will direct the films.
The Russo brothers, who directed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, will direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. And as if that weren’t enough, the studio has officially confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Universe as Doctor Doom (Victor von Doom). Avengers: Doomsday will be released in May 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars will be released in May 2027.
The crowd at the festival “exploded” when it was confirmed that Robert Downey Jr., known in the MCU as “Iron Man” Tony Stark, would return to the franchise.

The fifth Avengers film was originally set to be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. However, Cretton dropped out due to his desire to focus on other MCU projects, specifically the Shang-Chi sequel. Michael Waldron has also left his position as the film’s screenwriter. Stephen McFeely, who worked on Captain America and Avengers: Endgame, will take over for both films.

Avengers: Doomsday was originally titled Kang Dynasty when it was revealed back at SDCC 2022. The film took a dramatic turn after actor Jonathan Majors was fired from the MCU following his domestic violence conviction last year.
