Just a few days after a bug in CrowdStrike software caused 8.5 million Windows computers to crash, users of the Microsoft platform are now facing a new problem. It has become known that after installing the July security update for Windows 11 and Windows 10 and then rebooting, the computer may boot into recovery mode and ask the user to enter a BitLocker key.
The issue affects computers on which users have previously enabled the BitLocker encryption feature. After the number of reports on Microsoft support forums about difficulties with loading Windows quickly increased, the software giant was forced to acknowledge the existence of the problem. The company warned users about the possibility of difficulties with loading the OS after installing the July security update on the support page. According to available information, the problem affects all supported versions of Windows 11, Windows 10, as well as Windows Server 2008 and later.
If the user knows the BitLocker recovery key, then there should be no particular difficulties. The recovery mode does not reappear during subsequent reboots. Those who do not remember the key will need to go from the recovery screen to the online portal and log in to their Microsoft account to find the key in the “Manage recovery keys” section.
Windows crashes after installing updates are not uncommon, and users have had to deal with more serious problems brought by security patches at various times. In addition, BitLocker encryption is used by a small portion of Windows users. Microsoft is continuing to study the situation, after which the software giant intends to release a patch to fix the error that causes computers to boot into recovery mode.
