Rostelecom reported a decrease in video download speed, especially when choosing high resolution, on the YouTube video hosting service, as well as an increase in user complaints about the service. The operator warned about possible failures in YouTube in Russia, deterioration in the quality of video playback posted on the platform, as well as a decrease in their download speed on July 12.
“As previously reported, Rostelecom’s technical monitoring service began to record a deterioration in the quality of YouTube video downloads, especially in high-definition formats (HD, 4K). An increase in the number of requests to the company’s technical support service with complaints about YouTube’s “quality of work” was also noted,” they said on Wednesday. “Interfax” in the press service of Rostelecom.
Rostelecom explained the problems that had arisen by the growing wear and tear and exhaustion of the capacity of the equipment of Google Corporation, which owns the YouTube video hosting service. Since 2022, it has not been updating or expanding its systems in Russia, which ensure the functioning of the Google Global Cache (GGC) system. The latter is designed to cache and speed up data loading. The existing capacities are simply not able to cope with the ever-growing Internet traffic, which affects users of all Russian operators.
Rostelecom also noted that Internet resources and sites that are engaged in updating and increasing the capacity of equipment and software are not experiencing any problems in their operation.
In 2022, due to sanctions, Google stopped supplying new equipment to Russian operators. To increase bandwidth for growing traffic and ensure fast content loading, Google offered providers to connect to its networks directly.
