Adult Swim has released a teaser for the long-awaited adaptation of the horror manga Spiral by Junji Ito. The four-episode anime will begin airing on September 28.
According to the plot, the fictional town of Kurozu is engulfed by a curse – its inhabitants begin to turn into spiral figures. High school girl Kirie and her boyfriend Shuichi try to resist the evil fate.
Released in 1998–1999, the original manga gained cult status and brought Junji Ito worldwide fame. A film adaptation was announced in 2019, but its release was repeatedly postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic and the authors’ desire for perfection.
Spiral is being directed by Hiroshi Nagahama (Mushi Master, Flowers of Evil) and Production IG. According to the creators, they paid special attention to the visual component in order to preserve the spirit of Ito’s original illustrations.
