While we loved Psychonauts 2 and still consider it one of the best modern platform games, it’s no secret that developing the sequel was a challenge for Double Fine. This was a very public story thanks to the 33-part PsychoOdyssey documentary series that followed the game’s production, and just before the weekend a surprise epilogue episode debuted that gave us a few teasers of what Double Fine is currently up to.
In the episode, lead VFX artist Tazio Coolidge mentioned that he would be open to returning to Psychonauts “because we learned all those lessons,” but noted that it would be “hard as hell, dude.” This was followed by another developer adding that “we might do a third one someday,” to which another member of the team simply replied with “No…”
Needless to say, Double Fine is a mix of what it wants to do with the Psychonauts series. Considering there was a 16-year wait between the first and second games, maybe it’s okay for Double Fine to take a break and return to the platformer in a few years.
