Last week, Google’s Chrome browser suffered a major outage that left millions of Windows users temporarily unable to access their saved passwords. The issue lasted for about 18 hours and affected those running version 127 of the browser.
Po message According to Forbes, Google attributed the July 24 outage to a “change in product behavior without proper feature protection,” which prevented users from finding and saving passwords. The issue is estimated to have affected about 2% of Chrome 127 users on Windows, or about 15 million people. However, given that more than 3 billion people use the Chrome web browser, the number could be higher.
Google’s temporary solution required launching the browser via the command line with the “enable-features=SkipUndecryptablePasswords” flag, which was, to put it mildly, not very convenient for most users. However, the company quickly responded and released a full fix on July 25, which only required a browser restart.
“We apologize for any inconvenience this issue may have caused,” Google said, also recommending that affected users contact Google Workspace support.
