Ubisoft is not worried that the release of Grand Theft Auto VI could be negative for business.
Developers and publishers usually give a wide berth when a game like Grand Theft Auto VI is released. A blockbuster like the one GTA VI will undoubtedly be next year leaves other games sitting like lead on the shelves.
But for Yves Guillemot, this is no cause for concern. Quite the opposite: for the CEO of Ubisoft, such a release has the positive effect of getting more people to play.
Speaking on a quarterly earnings call, Guillemot said of the 2025 pipeline and competition from Rockstar Games:
“When GTA comes out, more people tend to come to play, which has a positive effect on the overall market. And other games that are available at that time also sell very well. We’ve seen that happen a few times, because we had very good sales when GTA 5 came out, and also when they released a remaster for the new consoles. It’s something that’s counter-intuitive, but it generally works for us.”
Whether he is right will be revealed in 2025 when Grand Theft Auto VI is released.
