In 2018, Google announced the closure of its goo.gl short URL generation service for consumers and developers, and a year later, the last link was created using it. Now, the IT giant has announced that links created using goo.gl will no longer work from August 25, 2025.
Google said that by that time, more than six years will have passed since the last short link was created. In addition, starting on August 23, 2024, short URLs that are still working will be accompanied by a warning: “This link will stop working in the near future.” However, users will still be able to follow such links and check an option so that the warning does not appear again the next time they follow them.
Google also notes that the shortened links’ soon-to-be-expired message may cause the redirect process to fail. “For example, if you’re using other 302 redirects, the interstitial message may prevent the redirect chain from completing correctly. If you’ve embedded social metadata into the landing page, the interstitial message will likely cause it to no longer appear where the original link was. For this reason, we recommend following these links as soon as possible,” Google said in a statement.
The addition of the interstitial message about the imminent end of support for short links is being rolled out gradually, so users still have time to save the information they are interested in or adjust their settings. In addition, Google suggests adding the query parameter “si=1” to existing goo.gl links to block the appearance of this message.
