After the success of “The Last of Us” and “Fallout,” fans of the “Like a Dragon” and “Yakuza” series can also look forward to a TV series. At the San Diego Comic-Con, director Masayoshi Yokoyama promised a big surprise as well as plenty of fan service.
With “Like a Dragon: Yakuza,” the next well-known video game series will make its debut in the world of TV series at the end of October. According to Amazon Prime, we can look forward to a new story that takes place in two time periods: 1995 and 2005.
It goes on to say that the story is told of a legendary Yakuza who is confronted with the consequences of his actions. At the San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, Masayoshi Yokoyama, the director of the “Like a Dragon” makers of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios, spoke about the TV series. As Yokoyama promised, the TV series not only tells a story that comes with a big surprise.
At the same time, fans of the video games can look forward to plenty of fan service and various elements that, according to Yokoyama, will always put a smile on their faces.
The director talks about the first episode
“There’s a big surprise at the end of the first episode,” said Yokoyama. “When I saw the ending, I couldn’t help but scream. I jumped to my feet in my office, excited by the plot twist.”
“My hands were shaking as I smoked a cigarette in our smoking room right afterward. I was so affected. For me, it was unbelievable.”
Regarding the fan service that the Like a Dragon: Yakuza TV series will offer us, Yokoyama added: “Aspects of the essence of the original are built in everywhere. The fans of the game who love the original story will understand. The spirit is there. They will be surprised every 30 seconds.”
“If you’re new to the world of gaming, it’s a new world. If you know it, you’ll be grinning the whole time.”
Kiryu differs from his video game role model
In the further course of his statement, Yokoyama pointed out that Kazuma Kiryu (played by Ryoma Takeuchi) and Akira Nishikiyama (played by Kento Kaku) are portrayed slightly differently in the TV series than in the games. A design decision that was made consciously by those responsible.
“The Kazuma Kiryu we created 20 years ago was perfect and there is nothing more to add to his character,” added the director. “When you see how they fight in this drama, it is obvious that they did not recreate the characters from the game.”
“This project gave birth to a new Kazuma Kiryu. At the same time, his rival Akira Nishikiyama was recreated by Kento Kaku. Their acting is definitely a must-see,” it concludes.
