Over 90% of Call of Duty players play less without skill-based matchmaking, a study says.
Publisher Activision has released a study on Call of Duty. It shows that 90% of COD players play less when skill-based matchmaking is turned off.
In a test in the shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III earlier this year, there was a 50% drop in skill-based merging. This led to a 90% drop in the rate of returning players. The drop-off rate was 80%.
Furthermore, 10% of the best players returned, which happened much less for all other players. This resulted in a smaller pool of players.
“Ultimately, this will result in a worse experience for all players as there are fewer and fewer players available.”
“In addition, this test only penalized skill in the matching rules. If they were to be completely abolished, we would expect the player population to decline rapidly within a few months, which would have a negative impact on all of our players,” said the publisher.
According to Activision, “80 to 90 percent of players experience better end-of-match rankings, stay in the game longer, and are less likely to quit.”
