The creators of the series “House of the Dragon” have prepared a surprise for viewers in the latest episode.
If you want to avoid spoilers for the final episode, don’t read this article.
Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin makes a cameo appearance (well, his face, anyway) in House of the Dragon, but you’d be hard-pressed to spot him unless you knew where to look.
According to IGN websitehis face was depicted on a weirwood tree near Harrenhal – it’s hard to notice, but that’s because the creative team hoped to impress the most attentive fans in this way.
Weirwood trees play a central role in one of the religious cults in Game of Thrones. The trees are believed to be home to old gods who watch over the faithful through faces carved into the bark.
For Martin, this is his first appearance in the series of the universe, and his face can be seen in more detail in the last episode, which will be released this Sunday (in Ukraine, the series will be available from Monday on Megogo).
“The challenge was for the audience to feel like they were seeing someone like him, but not be completely sure,” explained the series’ art director Dominic Masters.
Interestingly, Martin’s cameo goes against the rules he set for himself years ago. During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con in 2022, the writer said he wouldn’t appear in shows based on his work until he finished the long-suffering book The Winds of Winter.

House of the Dragon is a prequel to the hit Game of Thrones, based on George R. R. Martin’s novel Fire and Blood. The plot shows the struggle between the Green and Black Targaryens for the throne, events that take place 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
Returning to the cast for the second season are Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emme D’Arcy, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabienne Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney and others. Newcomers include Abubakar Salim as Alyn of Hull, Hale Rankin as Alice Rivers, Freddie Fox as Sir Gwaine Hightower, Simon Russell Beale as Sir Simon Strong, Clinton Liberty as Addam of Hull, Jamie Kenna as Sir Alfred Broom and others.
Now, House of the Dragon has officially been renewed for a third season.
Earlier, George Martin announced 8 series from the Game of Thrones universe. The development of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has already begun. HBO is also collaborating with Batman screenwriter Matson Tomlin to create a series about Aegon the Conqueror Targaryen. As for the direct sequel to Game of Thrones about Jon Snow, it was canceled due to a lack of source material. We will also still see the previously canceled series 10,000 Ships.
