Video games on TV? Sure, today it’s the norm but in the 90s and early 2000s it wasn’t exactly like that, there were few Italian commercials dedicated to video games and consoles, with some rare exceptions, such as the famous SEGA commercials with Jerry Calà. We offer you 5 that, we are sure, he has never forgotten.
The first Italian PlayStation commercial
It’s 1995 and Sony Italy promotes the launch of the PS1 in our country with this spot. An advert that fully reflects the period (the first half of the 90s) and that shows quite crazy sequences alternating with short game clips (like WipEout). Note how the Sony and PlayStation logos are highlighted, and the iconic slogan “don’t underestimate the power of PlayStation” cannot be missed, which has become a real promotional mantra for the Japanese company.
Pokemon Red and Blue
Hey little guy, shall we take a ride? This is the first Italian spot for Pokemon Red and Blue aired since the summer of 2000, even if “Italian” is a big word. The spot is the same one that has aired in North America since 1998, with the only addition of the voice over in our language. Iconic anyway.
Libido! SEGA and Jerry Calà
A compilation of SEGA console commercials starring Jerry Calà, at the time (early 90s) Italian testimonial for Master System, Mega Drive and Game Gear. The slogan “be careful, they are Giochi Preziosi” quickly became a catchphrase of the time.
PS2: only 599,000
In 2001, the price of the PS2 dropped to 599,000 in Italy (from 899,000 at its launch in October 2000) and Sony promoted the price cut with an advert that highlighted the “infinite possibilities of PlayStation 2.”
Nintendo 64: The Future Is Here, Now
The Nintendo 64 launch commercial, in 1997, shows off the console’s qualities such as its 64-bit power and its revolutionary controller for the time, as well as a focus on its advanced 3D graphics, concluding with: the future is here, now, with Nintendo 64.
