Games Workshop has reiterated that Amazon’s hotly anticipated Warhammer 40,000 films and TV series will not happen unless the two companies agree on “creative directions” by December 2024.
Speaking at its annual financial report, Games Workshop revealed a deal that gives Amazon exclusive rights to Warhammer 40,000 films and TV series, with the option for Amazon to license equivalent rights in the Warhammer Fantasy universe after the release of the first Warhammer 40,000 film.
In December 2023, Games Workshop said it would partner with Amazon for 12 months ending in December 2024 “to agree on creative guidelines for films and TV series to be developed by Amazon.” And that the agreement “will only be in effect if creative guidelines and methods are mutually agreed upon between Games Workshop and Amazon.”
“We will keep you updated as soon as possible,” Games Workshop said.
This means that Games Workshop and Amazon have just five months to sort themselves out, or the Warhammer 40,000 movie and TV series that fans of the grim universe want may never happen. It is clear that they have not been able to come to a final agreement in the past seven months, and the studios are at odds.
If Amazon’s Warhammer 40,000 projects are greenlit, they will feature Superman actor and Warhammer 40,000 superfan Henry Cavill. The Hollywood actor will star in the title role and will serve as an executive producer on the Warhammer 40,000 franchise across all Amazon Studios projects.
As the deadline approaches, Games Workshop and Amazon must align their creative visions to bring the Warhammer 40,000 universe to life on screen. The results of those negotiations will be eagerly watched by Cavill and hundreds of thousands of others.
