Wikipedia has long been a kind of island of immutability. However, even this bastion of tradition could not withstand the wave of progress. After many years of waiting, the most popular online encyclopedia is finally presented its users the long-awaited dark theme.
The trend for dark interfaces began about five years ago, when users realized the benefits of such a mode for reducing eye strain in the evening. In response to this demand, Android and iOS implemented system settings for a dark theme, and numerous apps and web services followed suit. Wikipedia, however, has long remained faithful to its classic light design.
However, under pressure from the community, the encyclopedia developers decided to make changes. Now users can enjoy comfortable reading of articles both in the desktop and mobile versions of the site thanks to the new “Dark” option in the color settings.
For those who prefer the desktop version, the process of switching the theme has become intuitive. The updated design now features a right panel where you can not only select the color scheme, but also adjust the font size and content width. If the panel is not visible, it can be easily called up by clicking on the glasses icon in the upper right corner of the page. In the Color section, users have three options: Light, Dark, and Automatic, which adjusts to the device’s system settings.
Mobile users are not left out either. For them, access to the color scheme settings is opened via the “hamburger button” in the upper left corner, where you need to select the “Settings” item.
