Assassin’s Creed Community Moderators on Reddit accepted decisive action regarding the ongoing debate about the historical status of Yasuke, one of the main characters of the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows. From now on, any doubts about the samurai status of the warrior of African descent will be punished by a ban from the forum.
Since the game’s announcement, the identity of Yasuke, who served as the prototype for one of the protagonists, has become a stumbling block for many fans of the series. The question of whether Nobunaga Oda’s retainer really held the title of samurai is causing controversy even among professional historians, not to mention ordinary gamers.
However, the subreddit’s moderators have concluded that these types of discussions are often conducted in bad faith. In a statement, they emphasized:
Our community is not meant to discuss historical facts. Most of us, as fans, understand that while these games provide insight into possible historical settings, we are not looking for absolute accuracy in this franchise.
The moderators also noted that players are primarily drawn to the Assassin’s Creed series for reasons other than historical accuracy, and warned:
If you’re here solely to complain about Yasuke’s inclusion or other inaccuracies in Ubisoft’s depiction of feudal Japan, it’s time to understand that this is not the place for such a discussion, nor will it ever be. From now on, any comments that question Yasuke’s social status, criticize his inclusion, or border on trolling under the guise of historical accuracy will be promptly deleted. Those who make such comments risk getting banned.
