It is believed that there could have been more layoffs.
Insider and journalist Jeff Grubb commented Bungie studio head Pete Parsons’ statement about layoffs on the team. In fact, Grubb writes, Parsons can no longer be considered the head of the studio.
According to the insider, Bungie is now headed by Sony’s head of gaming, Hermen Hulst. As head of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Hulst oversees game development.
And here’s another story
Grubb did not explain why the top manager decided to personally take on the studio, which was bought by Sony for several billion dollars. Most likely, it is a matter of finances: in his letter, Parsons admits that Bungie had been unprofitable for some time.
To cut costs, the studio will lay off 220 employees. In fact, Grubb claims, the layoffs could have been higher: 155 employees “integrated” with PlayStation Studios could also lose their jobs.
While Bungie is cutting staff, the company is simultaneously opening another studio to work on a new project. The insider did not share details about this game.
Interesting point: in late 2023 there were rumors that Sony could gain full control of Bungie if Destiny 2 underperforms. That’s apparently what happened.
