Despite the manufacturer’s ability to have fantastic materials, high-tech manufacturing, and also a combination of research and development to create a product with super high quality, it is almost impossible for them to make durability a top priority. Making a super durable product can be counter-productive, where the manufacturer will have difficulty selling more goods in the future. For peripheral manufacturers who also focus on the gaming and esports market – Logitech, the idea is always there. But it will be followed by a new business model.
Speaking in a recent podcast with The Verge, Logitech CEO Faber said that their innovation team actually already has an idea and prototype for a “Perpetual Mouse” concept. He was reluctant to talk about durability, but from the hardware side, this concept will be followed by a self-repair option as a focus, where gamers can buy components and replace parts of the mouse easily. The paid subscription system that Logitech is thinking about will be focused on the software side, where this “perpetual mouse” will continue to get support for more new features and functions to stay relevant. The ambition is of course to make users not have to “worry” about their mouse at all.
Logitech claims to have a “perpetual mouse” concept with a paid subscription system.
Of course, what was expressed by the CEO of Logitech is still just a discourse and needs further consideration, especially for what kind of monetization system he will carry. What do you think? Is this kind of “eternal mouse” system something interesting in your eyes?
