PlayStation Plus Extra had an excellent June thanks to Days of Play. In July, however, player numbers dropped significantly.
The first new additions to PS Plus in August are about to be announced. The unveiling will take place in the late afternoon at 5:30 p.m. In the coming weeks, the Extra and Premium releases will also be announced.
While it is still unclear which games Sony Interactive Entertainment will add to the subscription in August, it seems that the July additions to PS Plus Extra have been less popular. This is suggested by a survey by Truetrophieswhich is based on data from GameInsights. These are therefore not official statistics from Sony Interactive Entertainment.
Adjusted decline of 18.77 percent
According to Truetrophies, gameplay data samples from over 3.1 million active PSN accounts found that the PS Plus Extra and Premium games for July 2024 attracted a full 48 percent fewer players than the previous June 2024 offering.
A special effect must be taken into account here: As part of the Days of Play, subscribers received a series of additional bonus games in June – the strongest PS Plus month of the year so far – which generated additional player interest. If this effect is deducted, however, there is still a monthly decline of 18.77 percent.
Ultimately, July 2024 has the third lowest PS Plus Extra and Premium player count of 2024, according to Truetrophies, which takes into account the number of debut players for each PS5 and PS4 game newly included in PS Plus Extra.
How do these declines come about?
First of all, an adjusted monthly decline of 18.77 percent is likely to be within the range of usual fluctuations. The games released are sometimes more and sometimes less convincing.
In June 2024, new additions such as “Monster Hunter Rise”, “Far Cry 4” and two LEGO games were added to the subscription. In July 2024, “Remnant 2” attracted many PS Plus players, but the rest were apparently less impressive.
According to the survey, “Remnant 2” is the third most successful PS Plus extra game this year, but attracted 46.54 percent fewer players than “Dave the Diver” (April 2024). “Police Simulator Patrol Officers” (June 2024) was also able to mobilize over 20 percent more subscription players, as the figures from Truetrophies suggest. Here it is noticeable that “Remnant 2” is only playable on the PS5 and the still large PS4 base is left out.
There are also influences outside of the subscription, including seasonal declines and blockbuster releases like “Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.”
The most successful PS Plus months according to Truetrophies:
June 2024 (Top game: Police Simulator Patrol Officers) April 2024 (Top game: Dave the Diver) May 2024 (Top game: Red Dead Redemption 2) March 2024 (Top game: Marvel’s Midnight Suns) July 2024 (Top game: Remnant 2) January 2024 (Top game: Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands) February 2024 (Top game: Foamstars)
