The crisis that has hit Bungie continues despite the excellent work done with the Destiny 2 expansion The Final Form: CEO Pete Parsons announces that 220 employees have been laid off, with the Sony PlayStation subsidiary losing 17% of its workforce.
“This is going to have huge repercussions at every level of the company,” admits the Bungie representative before underlining that the staff cuts involve not only developers but also numerous management roles.
Reporting the layoff of 220 employees, the Bungie boss explains that “it became clear that we needed to make substantial changes to our corporate structure due to the rising costs of development and the changes that are affecting the entire industry. These changes will allow us to fully focus our efforts on Destiny and Marathon.”
Parsons also notes that all 220 now-former Bungie employees will be offered “a generous severance package, bonuses, and full health coverage. I realize this is terrible news, especially after the success we’ve had with The Final Form. But we’ve been operating in a challenging economic environment for the past year and exhausted all other options available to us before making this painful decision, so these layoffs are necessary to refocus our studio and reorganize our business around more realistic goals and sustainable financials.”
In the long open letter published by Parsons, the executive confirms the integration of Bungie into the ecosystem of Sony Interactive Entertainment, which, in the coming months, will materialize with the entry of 12% of Bungie staff into 155 roles of SIE. “This will be a period of enormous change for our studio”, explains Parsons after having announced the birth of a new studio within the PlayStation galaxy that will take care of the development of an action video game set in a new sci-fi universe.
