After reassuring gamers who are wary of the yellow paint found in so many modern video games, Ubisoft Massive has revealed which PlayStation exclusive inspired the open world of Star Wars Outlaws.
While Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment have stated that Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora (which they also developed) served as an inspiration in terms of environmental design and technical ambition, it seems that Ghost of Tsushima’s visually stunning open world served as “the biggest reference” for the project’s creative directors. The game’s creative director, Julian Gerighty, has stated that Sucker Punch Productions’ title, set during the first Mongol invasion of Japan, served as a major inspiration for Star Wars Outlaws, particularly in terms of the game’s environments.
“It’s very interesting because my biggest reference was Ghost of Tsushima, which is more on the Kurosawa side than the Western side, the John Ford side of inspiration for George Lucas,” Gerighty told GamesRadar before also giving credit to Red Dead Redemption for how well it crafted its open world as something that wasn’t “a checklist of repetitive tasks.” Ultimately, though, it was the power of Ghost of Tsushima’s “purity” to allow players to fully immerse themselves in the game’s fantasy that piqued his interest. “That’s the story, the world, the character, it all fits together with the gameplay that drives it all,” Gerighty said. “That’s the fantasy of ‘you’re a ninja samurai in Japan.’ That was one of the guiding lights.”
