The magistrate of Moscow’s Tagansky District has issued a decision on a fine of 4 million rubles against TikTok, since the popular video service failed to comply with the order of Roskomnadzor. This reports m24.ru edition with link to the official Telegram channel of the courts of general jurisdiction of Moscow.
According to the court ruling, TikTok Pte. Ltd. was found guilty of committing an administrative offence under Part 4 of Article 19.7.10 of the Code of Administrative Offences of the Russian Federation. This article concerns failure to provide information or knowingly providing false information to the body exercising functions of control and supervision in the field of communications, information technology and mass communications. The basis for imposing the fine was TikTok’s failure to comply with the order of Roskomnadzor, a federal executive body.
This is not the first time that major tech companies have been fined by Russian authorities. Google was previously fined 5 million rubles for refusing to comply with an order from Roskomnadzor, and before that another 4 million rubles for the same reason.
In addition, in early July, the Telegram messenger was also fined 3 million rubles for refusing to remove prohibited information. The court found the company guilty under the relevant administrative article.
Experts say such fines are part of growing pressure on international technology companies from Russian regulators to comply with local IT and mass communications laws.
TikTok representatives have not yet commented on the court’s decision. It remains unclear whether the company intends to appeal the ruling or pay the fine imposed.
