With a catalog full of illustrious names such as Clash of Clans, Clash Royale, Brawl Stars, Squad Busters and Hay Day, Supercell is one of the most famous realities in the current mobile gaming scene. The history of the Finnish studio, however, began long before those great successes: do you know what Supercell’s debut game was?
What was Supercell’s first game?
Supercell’s first game was Gunshine.net, a browser game that was launched in 2011, a year after the company was founded in 2010 in Espoo, Finland. If the name of this game means little or nothing to you, you are more than justified, since Gunshine.net had a very short life.
It was a free-to-play shooting and fighting game with MMO and RPG elements designed to be enjoyed on Facebook via web browser or on mobile devices. Players were asked to create and customize a character choosing from three different classes and work together with their friends or play alone to destroy the threats of Dawnbreak City, which included criminals, robots, monsters and zombies. The game action took place through an isometric top-down view.
Unfortunately, Gunshine.net’s servers were permanently shut down on November 30, 2012 for three reasons: it failed to keep gamers engaged for long periods of time, it was too difficult, and its mobile version did not work as well as its web browser counterpart. At its peak, Gunshine.net had only 500,000 players, a number so low that it convinced Supercell to surrender to the overwhelming power of Zynga (which at the time was making much bigger numbers with games like FarmVille), prematurely abandon the browser game segment and dedicate itself exclusively to mobile.
Today there is no way to play Gunshine.net and the only evidence of its existence lies in the memories of those who had the chance to play it in 2011 and in the videos that can be found online, such as the trailer we have attached at the top of this page. After this disappointment, Supercell had two more failures, Pets vs Orcs and Battle Buddies, before finding the right balance with its first international successes for mobile devices – Hay Day first and Clash of Clans soon after. The rest is history.
