The next-gen APU will feature significantly improved integrated graphics. A fresh Strix Halo leak hints that this high-end 2025 APU will feature up to 16 Zen 5 cores integrated into two chiplets, as well as a massive graphics subsystem. This will allow laptop makers to develop gaming devices without discrete graphics.
Now the Strix Halo case design has been revealed, confirming that it will be a large 37.5 x 45.0mm package (the same as LGA-1700 processors) and will use the FP11 package. However, the actual APU will be much smaller. The largest die, which also features RDNA3.35 graphics, will be at least 307mm². The smaller dies are two CCDs (each with 8 Zen 5 cores), which are each 66.3mm² in size.
Strix Halo CPU Die (Zen 5 CCD): 9.055mm x 7.327mm = 66.345mm2 Strix Halo IOD Die (RDNA 3.5 iGPU + IO): 19.18mm x 16.02mm = 307.26mm2 Strix Halo Full Package Die Size: 24.03mm x 19.78mm = 475.31mm2 Strix Point Full Die Size: 12.06mm x 18.71mm = 232.51mm2
Expected AMD Ryzen AI HX Strix Halo Specifications:
Zen 5 Chipset Design Up to 16 Cores 64MB Shared L3 Cache 40 RDNA 3+ Compute Units 32MB MALL Cache (for iGPU) 256-bit LPDDR5X-8000 Memory Controller Integrated XDNA 2 Engine Up to 60 AI TOPS 16 PCIe Gen4 Lanes FP11 Platform (55W-130W)
There are some leaked thermal design details for the Halo series, including at least three configurations: 55W, 85W, and 120W. It’s worth noting that this figure doesn’t take into account memory power consumption, which AMD estimates will be 9W for a 32GB system and 13W for a 128GB system.
The leak also confirms that the LPDDR5X-8533 memory will be connected to a 256-bit bus. What’s also interesting is that the Strix Halo is compared to an Intel-based system equipped with a GN21-X6 graphics card. This codename refers to the GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU, which can certainly be configured to consume more than 80 watts. However, in this scenario, such a system would have similar power requirements to the Strix Halo.
AMD plans to release Strix Halo in 2025. While the company hasn’t officially confirmed a release date, the product has already appeared in leaked roadmaps from several laptop makers.
