It’s a given that Braid was a critical and commercial success upon its original release, but it seems that its Anniversary Edition had a pretty much opposite fate, turning out to be a serious commercial flop.
The reveal was made by its creator, Jonathan Blow, who spoke of “terrible sales” for Braid Anniversary Edition, available since May 14 on PC, Nintendo Switch, mobile systems and PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Blow did not reveal specifically how much the sales of the new edition would amount to, however he also hinted that the game’s huge commercial failure could have very negative consequences on the future of Thekla, considered “uncertain” by its founder himself.
It must be said that Braid Anniversary Edition did not enjoy a large marketing campaign and there was not much media attention surrounding the re-release of the famous Puzzle/Platform. The announcement of the modern version, enriched with 40 new levels in addition to all the original content, dates back to 2020 and since then the game has been long-awaited, with Braid Anniversary Edition also encountering delays during development.
The hope now is that the flop of Braid Anniversary Edition will not prove to be too heavy a damage for Thekla, but Blow’s words are not encouraging for the moment.
