Since the takeover by Sony, things don’t seem to be going well at Bungie. After around 100 employees were fired at the end of 2023, the next wave of layoffs is now rolling in.
As announced on the official Bungie homepage, a total of 220 employees will have to look for a new job. This time, it’s not just the common people who are affected, senior and executive positions are also affected by the cuts. This is little consolation.

But that’s not all the bad news, because the company is cutting even more jobs. Another 155 people are set to find a new home at the various Sony studios in the coming quarters. In total, Bungie is losing almost 29 percent of its workforce.
The reason for the cuts is as simple as it is sobering: money. The money is simply not enough for the current size of the studio, as Bungie boss Pete Parsons explains. The Lightfall expansion for Destiny 2 fell far short of expectations and quality standards, and the development of The Final Shape and Marathon consumed too many resources.
“When this new development became clear, we knew we had to change our course and speed, and we did everything we could to prevent today’s outcome. But despite extensive efforts by our leadership and product teams to overcome our financial problems, the measures we took were simply not enough. That’s why today we must say goodbye to incredible talent, colleagues and friends.”
This is the second wave of layoffs to hit Bungie since the takeover by Sony. Around 100 employees were laid off at the end of 2023, and the downward trend is now continuing. Development efforts will focus on Destiny and Marathon in the future. Another sci-fi game in the works is set to find a new home at another Sony studio.
